The Other Gargoyle

29 Aug

The second bookend gargoyle is done. Instead of quietly pondering his books, this one is waxing eloquent.

Busy Busy Busy

13 Jul

I haven’t been posting much lately, but I have been making stuff. Today was a second firing of a second batch of leaf trays. The incremental improvement continues. This time the glaze is a little better chosen and applied, the plates are a little smoother. Next time, I’ll ask people what they want, and start focusing on usable designs and sizes. I think people are going to want bigger plates than I’ve been making.

Art Deco Face

13 Jul

My art deco face finished its second firing. I painted it black and put a deep green glaze on it. Very happy, except one of the swans’ beaks chipped off in handling. I can use art restoration tech to fix it so nobody will ever know.

Inventory

4 Jul

I tossed up some shelves to verticalize my inventory. Some day, I want to have one of those ladders on rollers like you see in old libraries. Gotta make more stuff first.

Big Kiln Day Tomorrow

2 Jul

Tomorrow’s a first-firing kiln day. So I’ve been furiously sanding, scraping and buffing frog trays and leaf plates. It’s my second go at the leaf plates, so the technique feels a little smoother, less experimental, more confident, and fixed– except my frogs … the more I make, the worse they seem to get.

Portrait with Swirls

25 Jun

Here’s a portrait with swirls made with the same rough pottery version of Shigaraki clay. It has a coarse powder of dried clay mixed into the soft clay, so it’s grainy, but won’t break carving tools after drying, as quartz sand would.

Bust of the Madonna in Rough Shigaraki Pottery Clay

25 Jun

This is a new Blessed Virgin Mary bust I made, this time using a grainy type of Shigaraki pottery clay. It’s great for big, expressive, rough n’ ready sketches, so this time I want to see how much detail and smoothness it can take.

From the Annals of Tasmanian Crime History

22 Jun

I took time off of shopkeeping at my online store (http://smillie.ocnk.net) to make something out of clay. A portrait with swirls from an old Australian police profile and mug shot. I may make a moon out of the round face, but not sure yet.

Back from Kiln

18 Jun

I brought a lot of stuff back from the kiln on Wednesday, which will give me some inventory at my shop, smillie.ocnk.net. I’m spending most of my clay time shopkeeping, but once it’s up and running, adding new things will be a simple matter.

Blessed Virgin Mary Bust

12 Jun

This is a porcelain Blessed Virgin Mary bust that gradually morphed into a study of how to make drapery folds. I learned a lot from it, and came one big, gratifying step closer to my still distant goal.
