Sun Face in Progress

16 Feb

This will be the center of a sun face I’m sculpting as part of a large outdoor wall hanging. It will also have a smiling crescent moon, a harp, and cranes in flight.

New Sun & Moon Sculpture

3 Jan

Here’s the final version of the original sculpture, ready for the mold-making process. I’ll make the mold with the greenware before firing it.

Christmas Angel Finished

2 Dec

The clay original of my Christmas Angel broke up during the mold-making process. Plenty of time to restore and salvage it later. The trade-off of a really good working mold is very much worth it. I can crank these out by the dozen now. God help us!

Christmas Angels, etc.

2 Nov

It’s time to gear up for Christmas, and this year I don’t feel confident enough to take on a nativity scene. So I’m going full-angel from now until December. (I did start a more pagan-esque greenman, and a Queen of Hearts, but their fate is in question at this point. Some day I do want to sculpt through a deck of cards, though.)

Pity The Fool

25 Oct

I was at a party the other night, when I started talking to someone, only realizing after way too long that I was calling her by the wrong name. Hi, here’s me:

New Sun & Moon Pairs

19 Oct

A new sculpture in the “doodling” stages. With these, I stumbled upon a new technique of drawing lines by pushing straight into the moist clay with the tip of a paint brush, then pulling it back out diagonally. I want to get polyclay or waxy effects with water-based pottery clay or porcelain.

Real-Looking Sun Face

5 Jul

This survived bisque firing, and I’ll glaze it next. I’m thinking it might make a good contrasting pair with the moon face.

Portland Cement

17 May

After experimenting with different kinds of plaster and cement, I’ve found a fantastic new material: white Portland cement– basically sidewalk. And at $20 for a 94-lb bag of powder, it’s virtually free. Here’s a moon I cast in cement with a little pillow of steel wool mixed in and no sand. I sanded it smooth and used Johnson & Johnson floor wax on it. Voila! Next, I’ll try to see how closely I can imitate the look of real sculpted marble.
