Works in Progress: Opera Sculpture Busts

15 Aug

I decided to make two opera sculptures. Pure fun. I’m going to hammer home the point that these are about theater rather than jump-scare horror or silent-scream angst by tacking happy-sad theater masks onto them. Subtle, see?

Portrait bust, work in progress

21 Jul

This is my new clay portrait bust, ready to hollow out for firing.

Ark of the Covenant

5 Jun

Two years in the making, my third Ark of the Covenant replica is nearing completion. I’ll just attach red velvet or felt to the insides of the rings for the carrying poles.

Portrait Bust, Work in Progress

11 Mar

The face of this portrait bust is finished, and now I just have to sculpt the hairРno easy task for a man whose hairstyling experience is limited to 30 seconds with a comb in the morning.

Portrait Bust: Licia

5 Mar

This portrait bust of Licia is done, unless I decide to add ornamentation to the pedestal. It’s made of pottery clay, so I’m debating whether to fire it before making the mold–which entails many hassles– or simply make a mold from the dry clay, which will likely¬†require cracking up the sculpture. I’m inclined toward the latter.

Ark of the Covenant (a work in progress)

23 Feb

I’ve attached the angels and Mercy Seat to the lid of my Ark of the Covenant replica, and primed it with black automotive primer. Now it’s time to attach the shittim, the acacia or maybe cypress trees that demarcate the sacred space on top. The next job will be refining the main box, then making the carrying poles and painting it all gold, inside and out.

Sculpting Facial Expressions

17 Feb

In efforts to take my sculpting skills to the next level, I’m going to try to have 100 practice sessions in which I make various facial expressions. This is No. 7, so 7 down, 93 to go.

Laughing Woman Sculpture

16 Feb

This sculpture will be a wall sconce with a small shelf on top. I’ll reproduce it by casting it in lightweight cast stone (or a thin layer of concrete, backed by fiberglass). I’m making this original out of plastilina oil-based clay.

Sun Face in Progress

16 Feb

This will be the center of a sun face I’m sculpting as part of a large outdoor wall hanging. It will also have a smiling crescent moon, a harp, and cranes in flight.

I made an art nouveau-style doorknob

12 Oct

This is a door handle inspired by art nouveau / jugendstil asthetics, which I will cast in concrete or metal. It will attach to a gate or door with four to six screws.
