Hit Rock, Graaaaah!

8 Apr

I started working on a Dedo Gargoyle (a cute, simple, contemplating creature) with this 45-lb block of alabaster to see what the stone is like. It’s very easy to carve, but a little too soft– almost chalky or talc-like. I’m starting to form a preference for marble, which is a lot harder– real rock. But it’s not like granite or onyx, which are so hard you need high-tech tools. You can still use the simple, ancient technology on marble. I just bought these two 25-lb blocks of Carrara Statuario are just waiting to be carved. Unk! Hit rock! Graaaah!
