Box-Making Tech Break

18 Dec

Time for a tech break, this time with box-making. I’ve set a little goal. Nothing ambitious. Just an ARK OF THE COVENANT. By March, when my dear friend Lillian goes back home.

Got to start somewhere, so I’m working on box-making. The lid with the Mercy Seat and angels will come later. I’m not sure if it’s clear in the pictures, but there’s a lot of tech going on here. My latest engineering philosophy is to make the box walls thick initially to withstand the initial distortion and cracking during the drying phase. Then go heavy on the chalky dry carving before a first firing. Then do some clean-up sanding and finishing with stone carving tools after the first firing. For the decorations, I’m thinking partly Indiana Jones, but also with Egyptian stone-cutting influences.

Wow, looks pretty core of the earth.

As any physicist will tell you, it’s made of such highly concentrated matter that it has to be placed on a stump of solid oak, or it would just fall straight to the center of the earth.
